About THEORY:

How can you remain progressive when progress becomes dangerous? A mysterious student posts questionably offensive material on the class discussion board, testing the liberalism of a young professor of film theory. She is obsessed with reading meaning into films and into the behaviour of her tormentor as the attacks become vicious and bizarre. Theatre, cinema, and new media combine to investigate the dangers of how we communicate today.

THEORY will rehearse approximately 15 hours per week beginning in early October, 2013 during evenings and weekends at the Alumnae Theatre, with more frequent rehearsals scheduled leading up to opening night.

About Alumnae Theatre Company's FireWorks event:

A series of 3 new full-length plays developed at Alumnae, plus associated workshops, panel discussions and other events, offering a rare opportunity to explore behind-the-scenes issues and aspects of the productions.

CHARACTERS:

ISABELLE: 30. Woman. A young professor of film theory. She is progressive, liberal-minded, and encourages freedom of speech. She is ambitious, analytical and tends to "take her work home" with her. When a mysterious student posts offensive material on the class online discussion board, Isabelle's liberal values are challenged.

LEE: Mid-30s. Woman. Isabelle’s wife and professor of English and creative writing who is comfortable in her career. She tries to support Isabelle when she is harassed by the mysterious student, but her ego gets in the way. She tends to pass judgment quickly.

OMAR: 40-something. Man. Head of the Film department. He is comfortable within the educational institution. Very matter-of-fact. He downplays the seriousness of Isabelle's harassment claim for two reasons: he wants to keep the student in the university because he has a high G.P.A., and he wants to prevent the problem from escalating.

RICHARD: 19. Man. A university student. He is charming, sweet, and sincere. He may or may not be the student who is harassing Isabelle. He is manipulative and highly intelligent.

SAFINA: 19. Woman. A university student. Intelligent and engaged student who is keen to do well in film theory. She initially presents more conservative opinions than some of her classmates, but grows to appreciate Isabelle's efforts to be progressive and encourage critical thinking.

DAVINDER: 19. Man. A university student. Interested in maintaining order.

JORGE: 19. Man. A university student. Outspoken, contrary, and likes to provoke his classmates. Intrigued by the controversy sparked by the online discussion board.
